In this sense, when the country of the center is interested in the extraction of a specific raw material, the development of that sector in that country of the periphery is in favor of their interests, so it will allow and support such development.įrom the central countries when there is an oversupply in a product or service, as domestic demand is met, the next step is to allocate the surplus supply to the developing countries. From the center they are given a passive role to peripheral countries basically limited to the supply of raw materials at low cost. The centers exert influence on the development of certain aspects of the periphery when it is convenient for the former to contribute to their own interests. The influence of the center on the periphery ![]() The centers not only produce the technical and technological advances that they impose within their sphere of influence, but also, they concentrate the fruits of the increasing productivity. In this way, in peripheral capitalism, the countries of the center exercise a centripetal force in which they prevent the economic independence of the periphery. That is to say, unlike the centrifugal force, which is characterized for example by automatic washing machines, where the elements are removed from the center (and that is why the clothes at the end of the washing process end up attached to the wall of the Washing machine), the centripetal force is the opposite, and the elements are pushed towards the center. Using physical concepts, we could say that between the center and the periphery a centripetal force is exerted. In this way, economic imperialism dictates patterns of what must be produced and how to do it, while peripheral capitalism obeys these guidelines. Economic imperialismĪnother way of understanding what peripheral capitalism is is taking into account the concept of economic imperialism, which dictates the economic pattern (developments, costs, raw materials to use, services to offer, etc.) based on its own Needs. This pattern of consumption that is imitated is not related to the level of productivity of their countries, thus creating new internal contradictions. In peripheral countries - and especially the upper strata of the social scale - they tend to imitate the consumption of the industrialized countries, thus erasing once again the culture of their own countries. This leads to precisely, it is necessary to buy it from the countries of the center.Īnother negative consequence of this is that the technique imported from the countries of the center does not require as much work force compared to that which exists in the peripheral countries, reason why they start to generate social pressures that even lead to the internal conflict. Here are some of the contradictions that arise in peripheral capitalism, the product of this imitation of the capitalist system: Technical / technological contradictionsīy imitating from the periphery the technique used in the centers, there tends to be a need for a high capital requirement that is not counted. However, this idea often runs counter to the intentions of capitalist hegemonic countries, which need the natural resources of peripheral countries to maintain their economy. There are thinkers who believe that the development systems of each country should not be imitated or imported from other countries, but create one's own based on the particular characteristics of each region. ![]() This is the case, for example, in the countries of Latin America. The former would be the"center"while the latter would be the"peripheral"countries.Īlthough the economic, social and cultural reality of the countries of the so-called"periphery"are so different from the central countries, the economic system in peripheral countries tends to imitate capitalism in the industrialized countries, leading to Great internal contradictions. Industrialized countries are fed on the raw materials that come from other countries. In capitalist systems it is forbidden for the state to intervene in the economy or at least to reduce its intervention to a minimum.
